A handmade full-grain leather ritual tealight tray, designed to seat up to three tea-candles. The part that holds the candle can be removed to expose coloured pig-suede. The detached piece is reversible.

Disclaimer: It's important to note that direct heat, wax and leather do not go well together. However, I have two thoughts about this:

  1. Items are meant to be used. Things get tarnished, which adds character.
  2. If you want to keep it pristine, consider using led candles.

The product photos showcases Deep Lake, Mulberry and Wine and all use the Brown thread.

Inspiration

I was looking through various photos of alters online, and in almost all cases there were candles. It occurred to me that despite the limitations of leather, I could safely make a flat holder to house small candles. Once I'd conceived of the circle with the three slots, my ideas grew out from there. I actually love that despite selling this as a candle holder, your imagination could think of many other uses. What would you use yours for?

Includes

  1. Branded presentation box, to store and display your collection piece.
  2. Sealed thank you note
  3. Certificate of Authenticity
  4. Two Polaroid photos taken during the crafting process (an extra keepsake for scrapbooking)

Does not include other accessories as seen in the photos.

How it's made

The decorative front is made from full-grain 5oz (2.5mm) vegetable-tanned leather. I've carefully finished the leather to achieve a rich, wooden sheen that enhances its natural beauty. A slot is created to house the removable leather candle holder. Pig suede has also being incorporated to add a touch of colour.

The reverse side features full-grain 5oz (2.5mm) vegetable-tanned leather, also finished to complement the front. I've embossed it with the Midlands Apothecary logo, adding a personal and authentic touch to the mat.

To bring the two pieces of leather together, they are adhered with water-based contact cement. The edges are carefully hand-painted in leather acrylic paint for both visual appearance and protection. The base is also hand-stitched using the saddle-stitch technique, using 0.8mm Tiger Thread. This meticulous process not only ensures the mat's longevity but also highlights the quality of the piece.

Approximate Dimensions

  • The dimensions of the base are 200mm wide by 120mm tall by 6mm thick.
  • The circle has a diameter of 100mm by 6mm thick.
  • The tea-candle slots have a diameter of 38mm.

Natural Leather Characteristics

  • The colour of your leather piece may differ slightly from what you see on your screen.
  • Due to the dyeing process, the colour may vary slightly depending on the area of the leather.
  • As full-grain leather undergoes minimal processing, natural wrinkles may remain visible and their patterns can vary from piece to piece.
  • With natural leather, some blemishes are to be expected, though I always do my best to keep these to a minimum.
