A leather tarot deck stand for your altar. Sized just larger than a standard deck so it rests neatly on top (open stand—not a box), keeping cards clean and ready between readings. Handmade in England with full-grain leather and hand-finished edges; fits most tarot and oracle decks.

Inspiration

I've been looking at lots of different altars as of late. I would often see tarot cards sat on the table. I thought it would be cool to make a little stand for a tarot deck, that would allow me to wrap my fingers around the cards to easily pick them up when loose. It can be a bit fiddly picking up loose cards directly from a flat surface.

How it's made

The decorative front is made from full-grain 5oz (2.5mm) vegetable-tanned leather. I've carefully finished the leather to achieve a rich, wooden sheen that enhances its natural beauty. The top designs will vary, based on whether I've incorporated suede or just tooled the leather. I also added small rails to help keep the deck in place.

The reverse side features full-grain 5oz (2.5mm) vegetable-tanned leather, also finished to complement the front. I've embossed it with the Midlands Apothecary logo, adding a personal and authentic touch to the stand. This is also one of the rare pieces where I have included feet to help the piece stand slightly proud of the table.

To adhere the two pieces of leather together, I apply water-based contact cement. The edges are carefully hand-finished (burnished and edge-painted) in leather acrylic paint for both visual appearance and protection. The main base and rails are then hand-sewn together. This meticulous process not only ensures the stand's longevity but also highlights the quality of the piece.

Approximate Dimensions

  • The dimensions of the stand are 146mm tall by 95mm wide by 6mm thick.
  • Feet add ~8mm to in-use height
  • The central card placement is 126mm tall by 76mm wide, which is ideal for the most common size of tarot card.

Natural Leather Characteristics

  • The colour of your leather piece may differ slightly from what you see on your screen.
  • Due to the dyeing process, the colour may vary slightly depending on the area of the leather.
  • As full-grain leather undergoes minimal processing, natural wrinkles may remain visible and their patterns can vary from piece to piece.
  • With natural leather, some blemishes are to be expected, though I always do my best to keep these to a minimum.
